The Toronto Nationals (0-2) fought hard in their first game at Lamport Stadium against the Chesapeake Bayhawks. With just under 4,000 fans cheering them on, the Nationals came up short with a loss of 25-12. Brian Vetter of the Bayhawks was the game MVP with four goals scored.
Steven Hoar and Josh Sims scored the first two goals for the Nationals, with Brodie Merrill getting the assist to Sims. The Bayhawks were on the attack with nine goals scored in the first quarter.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Craig Point brought the fans to their feet, after he scored the third goal of the game for the Nationals. Less than a minute and a half later, Dan Dawson kept the excitement flowing with his goal, followed by Josh Sims and John Grant Jr., ending the half with a score of 12-6 for the Bayhawks.
After an amazing halftime performance by the Lady Nats dance squad, the Nationals remained positive in their fight to win their first game of the season. After almost nine minutes into the third quarter, Brodie Merrill thrilled the fans with the Nationals’ seventh goal. By the end of the third, the score was 16-7.
Toronto crept closer to the Bayhawks in the fourth, scoring four goals, but still fell short in the end. Mark Steenhuis scored a two pointer and a single point in the final minutes of the game. Although it was a tough day on the field, fans are looking forward to watching their defending champions regain their title.
