MUNDORF AND OUTLAWS TOO MUCH FOR HAMILTON

(Hamilton, May 14)… The Denver Outlaws defeated the Hamilton Nationals, 18-10, tonight at INVESCO Field. Denver broke open a 6-5 game with eight goals in the third quarter to hand Hamilton a loss in its inaugural game.

Brendan Mundorf led the way with a 10-point night (6+4), while Drew Westervelt, Athan Iannucci and Peet Piollon each netted three goals. Jesse Schwartzman earned the win in goal in a 13-save effort. Hamilton got a hat trick from Jarrett Davis, a two-goal effort from Jordan Hall, and a two-point goal from Brian Christopher. Geoff Snider also had one goal, one assist and 16 faceoff wins.

Denver opened the game with two straight goals before Hall scored off an individual effort to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Outlaws answered with two goals, including a transition goal by Mundorf at 8:10. Cody Jamieson netted his first MLL goal at 11:29 off a goal-mouth scramble. Joe Walters then scored his first goal since the 2009 season to cut the deficit to 4-3. Mundorf ended the 2-0 Hamilton run with his third of the first quarter. Rookie Jarrett Davis scored his first two professional goals in the second quarter to bring Hamilton within 6-5 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Denver used three power-play goals and two goals each from Poillon and Westervelt. Brian Langtry opened the third quarter with a goal at 3:58 from Mundorf for a 7-5 lead. Denver matched its biggest lead of the game as recently acquired Peet Poillon scored from Mundorf, who collected his sixth point of the night. Hamilton trimmed the lead back down to two with a goal by Geoff Snider. Will Dalton and Poillon tallied late in the third for a 10-6 lead. Westervelt then connected on the power play at 11:26 for an 11-6 advantage. The lead ballooned to 13-6 as Athan Iannucci and Mundorf added goals. Westervelt scored from the left wing side to become the third Outlaw to record a hat trick.

Christopher hit a two-pointer at 1:45 to make it 14-8 to open the fourth quarter. Denver, however, answered with a two-pointer of its own just 2:13 later. Mundorf continued to have the hot hand as he scored his sixth of the game at 6:11. Just 41 seconds later Hall scored his second of the night for the Nats. Mundorf capped off his impressive night with his 10th point on a feed in front of the net to Iannucci at 11:01 for an 18-9 lead. Davis completed his first MLL hat trick in the final minute for the 10th Hamilton goal. Nats’ Joe Marra replaced starter Scott Rodgers at the start of the fourth quarter.
