HAMILTON, Ontario, Canada - Prior to Saturday night, the last time that attackman Casey Powell appeared in a Major League Lacrosse game, he was leading the Rochester Rattlers to their only MLL championship.
In his first game since that 2008 MLL title-clinching victory, the former Syracuse University attackman scored two goals with two assists in the Hamilton Nationals' 13-8 loss against the Boston Cannons at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The 2005 Warrior MLL Offensive Player of the Year, Powell is the MLL's all-time leader with 392 points after his four-point effort against the Cannons on Saturday night. He also has scored 199 career goals and needs just one goal to become the seventh player in MLL history to score 200 career goals.
A four-time All-American attackman at Syracuse University, Powell was acquired by the Nationals on July 19 from the Rochester Rattlers in exchange for a second round pick in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft.
In addition to leading the Rattlers to the 2008 MLL title, he helped the Long Island Lizards win the inaugural league championship when they defeated the Baltimore Bayhawks. Powell scored 30 goals with 23 assists in 14 games during the regular season before contributing four goals with four assists in the play-offs.
Powell had his best season in 2003 when he set the MLL single-season record with 70 points in 12 games, a mark that stood for four years until his Rochester teammate John Grant, Jr. tallied 71 points in 2007. He scored 37 goals, including a two-point marker, with 32 assists as the Rattlers posted a 5-7 record.
Powell also tallied 68 points during the 2002 season, scoring 37 goals, including a two-pointer, with 30 assists.
Named to the 2005 All-MLL Team, Powell has been named as the Bud Light Player of the Game 10 times in his career while earning eight MLL Offensive Player of the Week awards. He is one of 10 players in MLL history to earn at least 10 Bud Light Player of the Game honors.
