(June 1, 2012)… Tonight, local lacrosse fans can catch the opening of the much-anticipated film “Crooked Arrows” at select theatres in Canada. The movie, which features cameo appearances from Hamilton Nationals Assistant Coach Gary Gait and defenseman Brodie Merrill, will debut at AMC Whitby and AMC Yonge & Dundas. Check local listing for times or go online to www.crookedarrows.com.
“Scores as a family film with terrific action sequences. What ‘Mighty Ducks’ did for youth hockey, ‘Crooked Arrows’ should do for lacrosse,” wrote Loren King of The Boston Globe.
Like most great sports’ movies, “Crooked Arrows” champions the underdogs and their quest to win a championship. But this movie goes beyond X’s and O’s, and reaches the roots of the game of lacrosse. In “Crooked Arrows”, mixed-blood Native American Joe Logan inspires the Native American boys and teaches them the “true meaning of tribal pride.” Fueled by their heritage and their newfound potential, the coach and team battle their way to the state championship against their privileged prep school rivals.
The movie features some of the greatest coaching names and Major League Lacrosse players in the game. MLL stars Paul Rabil, Zack Greer and Merrill are featured during the championship game between the Crooked Arrows and powerhouse Coventry. Merrill recently passed Paul Cantabene (538), as the MLL’s all-time ground ball leader. The Orangeville, Ontario, native has been named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Year and an All-MLL Team selection the past six seasons. A collection of college coaches are also featured in the movie, including Gait.
“It’s awesome to be a part of a movie that honors the game and the history of the sport,” said Gait.
The Hamilton Nationals travel to play the expansion Charlotte Hounds on Saturday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m. The Nationals will play the Hounds on national TV on the CBS Sport Network.
