(August 6, 2012)… US Lacrosse announced that today midfielder Joe Walters has been added to the U.S. men’s national senior team roster for the “Duel in Denver.” The addition of Walters rounds out the 25-player Team USA squad that will face Team Canada on September 8th in a 7:00 p.m. (Mountain time) exhibition game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
Walters, the Nationals’ all-time leading scorer, was a member of the silver medal-winning 2006 U.S. men’s national team and the 2009 U.S. men’s national training team. In his third season with Hamilton, Walters currently ranks first on the Nationals and fourth in the MLL in scoring with 42 points. A six-year Major League Lacrosse (MLL) veteran, Walters is a four-time MLL all-star and has been named to the All-MLL team three times in his career. He also is a four-year veteran of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and won his first league title as a member of the Rochester Knighthawks in 2012.
The “Duel in Denver” is a rematch of the 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship gold-medal game, in which Team USA defeated Canada, 12-10, in Manchester, England, and it serves as a prelude to the 2014 FIL World Championships, which will be hosted by US Lacrosse in Denver, July 10-19, 2014. The U.S. and Canada have met in the championship game of the last four FIL World Championships.
The event will feature many of the top American and Canadian players from the 2010 FIL World Championship and also will serve as a launch point for the selection of the training team that will comprise the 2014 U.S. men’s national team. The 25-member U.S. men’s senior team will play its first game under the direction of new head coach Richie Meade, former Navy head coach who was recently selected to lead the men’s program at Furman, and assistant coaches Kevin Cassese (Lehigh), Dave Pietramala (Johns Hopkins) and Jeff Tambroni (Penn State).
The Hamilton Nationals will close out the 2012 Major League Lacrosse season when they host the Long Island Lizards on Saturday, August 11th at 7:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on ESPN3.
