1/26/13 2:52 PM
(January 26, 2012)… Four members of the Hamilton Nationals will play for the U.S. Men's National Team on Sunday, January 27th at the Champion Challenge. Nationals Scott Rodgers, Benson Erwin, and twin brothers Cameron and Roman Lao-Gosney will take part in an exhibition against defending NCAA champion Loyola. (Pictured: Cameron Lao-Gosney)
Scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., this eighth annual event will be the first in which the Team USA men take on the defending NCAA champion. Team USA also will square off against 2012 NCAA semifinalist Notre Dame on Saturday, January 26th, with Jacksonville University also scheduled to participate in the event.
Rodgers completed his third season in the MLL in 2012. In 2011, he was third in the MLL with an 11.46 goals-against average and fourth with a .558 save percentage. He led the Nationals to the MLL Finals. Rodgers was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 NCAA Championship as he helped Notre Dame reach the title game of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. In January, he will play in his second straight Champion Challenge with Team USA.
Erwin was added to the Nationals’ roster this week from the MLL Player Pool. He enters his seventh season in Major League Lacrosse. The defensive midfielder last played in 2010 for the Chesapeake Bayhawks. In his career, he has played in 55 games and recorded seven goals, one two-pointer, and 17 assists for 25 points. He also collected 94 ground balls in a career that has taken him to Baltimore, Denver, Washington and Chesapeake. In his rookie season, he was a member of the 2005 World Champion Baltimore Bayhawks.
Cameron Lao-Gosney made his Nationals debut on August 4th. The Lehigh University product was acquired, along with a third-round pick in 2013 Collegiate MLL Draft and attackman Bryan Neufeld, from the Charlotte Hounds in exchange for faceoff specialist Geoff Snider in July. He played in three games for the Hounds in 2012.
Roman Lao-Gosney also completed his rookie season in the MLL. He appeared in four games with the Nationals and scored his first professional goal on August 4th. The former Third Team All-American at Lehigh was claimed off MLL Waivers in 2012 by the Hamilton Nationals.
The reigning world champion U.S. men's national team, which defeated Canada to win the 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship, will bring 38 players to evaluate prior to tryouts for the 2014 U.S. men's national team, to be held August 30-September 2, 2013. At the 2012 Champion® Challenge, Team USA defeated the University of Denver 16-15 in overtime.
The Team USA roster for the Champion® Challenge also includes Matt Danowski (Charlotte Hounds), Steele Stanwick (Ohio Machine), Peet Poillon (Charlotte Hounds), Jordan Burke (Boston Cannons), John Galloway (Syracuse) and Alex Smith (Chesapeake Bayhawks).
